Good Accounting Makes Good Neighbors

OK, the phrase is actually ‘good fences make good neighbors,’ but good accounting is crucial to nonprofit success. Since 1998, Neighbors Empowering Youth (neypcworkshop.org) has implemented technology service programs to bridge the digital divide, especially focusing on NorthWest Pasadena. They started as a grassroots organization, refurbishing computers in the founder’s garage and giving them to low-income families. They have grown and now have a community education center with services ranging from basic computer skills classes, robotics and hardware engineering. Many of their resources are donated, including their inventory of computers and their Executive Director’s time, so their cash budget doesn’t reflect the size of the organization. JRP volunteer Janice Mercade has worked with NEY for over a year to upgrade their accounting processes, train volunteers and staff on maintaining good records, and generally help NEY’s finances reflect the growth of the organization. Many thanks to Janice for her many hours of pro bono time helping a grassroots organization become a sophisticated community resource!
