What Does a Project Manager Really Do?

Mickey is an IT project manager who loves using his skills to give back to the community. Mickey had worked on a prior Jericho Road project and told JRP Exec. Dir. Melanie Goodyear he was ready for another. “I’d like to take on a challenging project,” Mickey said. It just so happened that Melanie had the perfect project for Mickey.

Pasadena Media is a nonprofit that produces programming for four public access channels in Pasadena. The organization desperately needed a new web site to accommodate four separate video on-demand channels, including live and past year programming. The site also needed the ability to fulfill orders through e-commerce, along with promoting Pasadena Media’s mission of free speech and community connections.

Mickey and Melanie decided several additional JRP volunteers were needed for a project this complex. They wanted to find team members with the right skills and a genuine passion, willing to work over a number of months on a pro bono project. Melanie reached out to her network of JRP volunteers and asked Harish Sundararaman to help with website programming; Adrian Cook would be responsible for site design; and Stephanie Doiron joined the team to oversee site navigation and message consistency.

As Project Manager, Mickey’s role was to run a weekly meeting with the team, establish deadlines for each of the key elements, co-ordinate with the Pasadena Media client, keep all of the team members engaged, and ensure the project was completed on time.

The project started in August 2017 and over the next 9 months, the 4 Jericho Road team members met in person or on the phone every week. Each team member made valuable contributions throughout the entire project. Mickey kept the Jericho Road team on track meeting priorities, getting valuable feedback from the client, and completing the new site on time. The site just went live over the summer, and it looks fantastic: www.pasadenamedia.org. You can even watch Melanie’s fascinating interview with Brian Biery on Power of One.

Mickey, Melanie and the entire Jericho Road team are incredibly proud of the web site they delivered to Pasadena Media. Chris Miller, Pasadena Media’s Chief Operating Officer, said of the project “The site has immediately put a current and sleek face on the organization. Also, adding the video playback adds tremendous functionality that should bring in a previously underserved constituency.” The team’s commitment, expertise and passion came together to produce a website that will benefit the entire Pasadena community. They truly made a difference.

Many thanks to volunteer Mark Rice, a nonprofit marketing consultant, for writing this article. No, the team didn’t go to Australia to celebrate completing the project, but the Pasadena Media studio has some fun special effects!
