Invest in Our Children, Our Communities, Our Future

Schools and Communities First is supported by a broad coalition of leaders and organizations to:

  1. Reclaim $12 billion every year for our schools and local communities.
  2. Close commercial property tax loopholes that corporations and wealthy investors use to avoid paying their fair share of property taxes.
  3. Protect all homeowners and renters by maintaining tax protections for ALL residential property
  4. Ensure strict accountability so that money goes directly to our schools and communities.

California is a state of many contradiction. California is the 5th largest economy in the world, has 26% of US Billionaires, and California CEOS make 361 times more than their workers. California has the highest rate of poverty, is 39th in per pupil spending, and spends more on our prisons than on education.

California ranks 50th in K-12 spending per students.

Passed by voters in 1978, Prop. 13 capped state taxes for all types of property at 1% of the purchase price, with annual increases of no more than 2%. Critics have long complained that California is losing out on billions of dollars in revenue each year from valuable business properties that have never changed hands and thus never had their taxes reassessed.
