Board Service: Janet McIntyre
Janet McIntyre is the Board Chair of Jericho Road Pasadena and has been an important part of JRP’s growth; Janet is happy to see the results of her board work as JRP celebrates our 10th anniversary!
Janet is currently the Vice President of Programs and Training at Executive Service Corps of Southern California. Previously, she worked in development in the arts, both at KUSC Public Radio and at the LA Philharmonic/Hollywood Bowl. Janet joined the JRP board of directors in July of 2017.
When discussing board service and the ways in which the community commitment impacts her life, Janet shares:
“It’s one of the few opportunities in life that is a win-win-win. By serving on a nonprofit board you get to give back and help your local community, you get to connect with other people in your area, and you get to further develop your professional skills and connections.”
On celebrating JRP’s 10th anniversary and JRP’s skilled volunteer program:
“People want to be able to use their professional skills to help an organization grow and to have a positive impact on their community, so it’s just a great model.”
JRP provides a board matching program in addition to the volunteer program. Using a hands-on approach, JRP staff meets with local nonprofits and local professionals looking for board service opportunities, and works to match the right person with the right board.
Nonprofits need strong leadership that reflects the lived experience of the populations they serve, and far too often, this is not the reality. JRP works to diversify nonprofit boards and places an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion in board matching.
While discussing board leadership, Janet emphasized the need for inclusion and authenticity on a board, saying, “No one wants to be a token.” Boards should authentically include and empower the communities they serve.
