JRP hosts 4-part workshop demystifying fundraising for boards
A key responsibility of board service is ensuring adequate resources to meet your organization’s mission — and yet many board members feel uncomfortable asking for money. JRP is offering Resourcing Your Mission, a virtual four-part workshop that builds on the latest philanthropic data and research to give board members proven strategies and practical advice that will make them feel more comfortable and be more successful in their fundraising role.
Trainer Trip Oldfield, CFRE began by stressing how important it is for board members to have a clear picture of where their organization’s funding actually comes from. Sources can range from earned income, fee for service and social enterprise businesses to philanthropic contributions, grants and special events. He noted that while the latter category is the primary source of funds for many nonprofits, it can also be the most labor-intensive for the return.
Trip proposed that participants think of philanthropy as a people enterprise, not a money business, noting that the word itself means “love of humanity.” He believes it’s vital for nonprofits to build a culture of philanthropy across board, staff, volunteers, donors and former clients. He also stressed the importance of ensuring board members understand the critical role of fundraising in their responsibilities—including their own personal giving.
