How Pasadena Senior Center Modernized Their Brand with Community-Driven Design

Pasadena Senior Center is a donor-supported nonprofit with no local, state or government funding. Attracting new supporters is critical, and that means keeping the Center and its brands fresh and relevant on community sites.

Opened in 1960, PSC was the first senior center in Southern California and one of the first in the country. In 1999, it became the first nationally accredited senior center in the state. Today, its mission is to improve the lives of older adults with opportunities for social interaction, fitness programs, basic support and needs services, education, volunteerism and community activism.

Last month, PSC Nonprofit Project Manager Charmaine Nelson launched an initiative aimed at taking a fresh look at the Center’s social media posts. The goal was to create new templates for the Center; Scott Pavilion, PSC’s popular event and meeting destination; and the Pasadena Senior Games, the Center’s annual series of athletic events for competitors over fifty.

Charmaine’s first step was to contact Jericho Road Pasadena to help her locate a volunteer graphic designer to spearhead the project. JRP connected her with Pasadena-based Peter Stiefel, a seasoned design and branding consultant known for creating social media strategies that enhance brand visibility and engagement.

“We created a more consistent look for the posts, using related colors and fonts to updatte the overall branding and design language,” Peter says. “This produced a more cohesive and eyecatching end result.”

Peter found Charmaine “super flexible” and easy to work with. He especially appreciated the way she provided good direction at the outset, then made sure he had all the resources he needed to deliver results. Charmaine enjoyed Peter’s task-oriented style, which kept her team focused on the goal of the project. The results were rewarding for both parties—and for PSC.

“Jericho Road Pasadena is so resourceful at finding the right person for the work needed,” Charmaine says. “Peter was the ideal choice for us.”
