Bob Harrison:Taking Service to Heart

Although he may be known to much of Pasadena as an owner/partner of the city’s beloved eatery–Green Street Restaurant–within the local non-profit community, Bob Harrison is also known as a dedicated volunteer.

Working with Jericho Road Pasadena, he’s generously shared his knowledge and experience with a diverse roster of local non-profit organizations. Bob’s work with the Alhambra Historical Society included guiding the board through a strategic planning process that helped define the organization’s efforts for the next few years.

He’s also helped the board of the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts to define their purpose and prioritize their actions to fulfill that purpose. And in support of Arlington Gardens, Bob worked with the board to build cohesion around the mission–along with defining the board members’ responsibilities toward that mission.

Bob acknowledges that at times, volunteering includes problem-solving. “I received feedback from board members of an organization that, before my involvement, they felt frustrated because they seem to continually have the same discussions over and over with very little follow through.

After going through an agreed-upon scope of work with Bob, they felt that there was much more accountability and many of the obstacles had been discussed and removed.

As to why Bob himself volunteers, “I believe in the work of so many non-profit organizations. I enjoy working with board members who volunteer for these organizations and the people who staff them. Having a role in helping organizations improve and become more effective is very rewarding.

When asked if he would recommend volunteering to those considering opportunities, Bob’s message was clear. “Just do it. Working with nonprofits is challenging, interesting and rewarding.”
