While our Jericho Road Pasadena (JRP) volunteers are much admired and appreciated for the time, talent and passion they bring to each non-profit organization they support, that admiration often works both ways.
Such was the case for JRP volunteer John O’Malley, who heads up the Pasadena-based O’Malley International Associates, a global communications agency. “During my first meeting with the executive director of the Mount Lowe Preservation Society, I was not prepared for the incredible amount of knowledge, passion, and dedication he showed regarding his agency’s mission. I have admired him ever since.”
John’s work with the organization, which is aimed at securing and preserving the history and artifacts related to the Mount Lowe railway, included advising the executive director on board governance, communications, and fund development.
“We developed workable strategies for recruiting new board members as well as for engaging individual benefactors, corporations, and philanthropic organizations.”
In addition to his work with the Mount Lowe Preservation Society, John also supported the Professional Child Development Association (PCDA), advising their senior management team on creating an effective fund development plan including strategies for engaging individual benefactors, corporations, and philanthropic organizations.”
John’s advice to someone who’s considering volunteering their own professional skills?
“Volunteering my professional skills is so much more rewarding than writing a check.
You meet outstanding people and learn from them — and you are given an opportunity to help advance their cause… contributing your skills and experience is rewarding in ways you cannot imagine.”
