Board fundraising workshop Part 2: common mistakes

A key responsibility of board service is ensuring adequate resources to meet your organization’s mission — and yet many board members feel uncomfortable asking for money. JRP is offering Resourcing Your Mission, a virtual four-part workshop that builds on the latest philanthropic data and research to give board members proven strategies and practical advice that will make them feel more comfortable and be more successful in their fundraising role.

Trainer Trip Oldfield, CFRE, immediately intrigued attendees by promising a look at the seven most common mistakes NPOs make when creating a fundraising strategy. (One of them was simply not creating any plan at all!) Another was focusing on events, the least profitable funding avenue due to the amount of time and money it takes to produce them. A third was relying heavily on grants and corporate funding, easier (but less effective) than personal fundraising because applying for such money is so defined and structured.

Trip concluded his rundown of all seven mistakes with reading suggestions for the group, including Fundraising Realities by David Lansdowne, Cloudburst by Tom Iselin and Donor-Centered Fundraising by Penelope Burk.
