Throwback Thursday: Managing human resources

Journey House supports former foster and probation youth in living fully independent, successful lives. Many people don’t realize that children who remain in foster care until aging out at 18 (optionally 21) are expected to be able to provide their own food, shelter, clothing, transportation, medical care, and college expenses with little assistance from Day One of their “emancipation.”

Journey Road had an employee manual, but it needed updating. JRP volunteer Betty Lui, Human Resources Manager of Maintex Facility Solutions, the largest manufacturer-distributor of custodial cleaning products in the Western US, stepped in. She not only helped the Journey House staff bring its manual up to current standards, but guided them through Employment Development Department forms and continues to keep them on top of changes in California employee rights and laws.

“We are very happy we’re linked to Betty,” says Jorge. “We look forward to working with her again. Her professional connections have been extremely helpful in enabling us to accomplish our goals and further our mission.”

The pleasure was also Betty’s. “I enjoyed helping an employer that’s meeting a need in its community,” she says.
