Volunteer pro finds a welcome new nest
Good financial management is crucial to the long-term health of any nonprofit. Pasadena Audubon Society presents complex challenges in this regard because it pursues a broad mission—not only educating people about birds and the joy of birding, but also getting involved in ecological and conservation work. Its diverse programs range from traditional birdwatching and education programs to school gardens and ecological advocacy.
When PAS realized its treasurer was struggling, they turned to Jericho Road Pasadena for help. JRP responded in a powerhouse way by sending volunteer Gary Breaux, its own Board Treasurer and the recently retired Chief Financial Officer for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
Gary began working to mentor PAS’s treasurer, answering questions, helping her gain an understanding of the organization’s myriad financial requirements, and familiarizing her with best practices. He also met with the PAS Financial Committee to help them shape their investment policy.
Then came the surprise ending. The treasurer decided to step down, and PAS quickly moved to ask Gary if he’d consider stepping in. He happily agreed, persuaded in part by his personal interest in native birds and plants. “We didn’t finish the full policy rewrite, but with Gary assuming the role of Treasurer, we are very well set up for that,” notes one delighted Financial Committee member.
What’s next for Gary and his new flock? Keep watching.
